How's Your "Constancy of Purpose"?

Deming's famous "14 points" have been the foundation of quality since their inception.  By design, point #1 is "Constancy of Purpose" which basically means maintaining a focus of the important long term vision- NO MATTER WHAT.  Leaders establish constancy of purpose by anticipating and assessing the impact of future changes, nursing the culture of the organization needed to adopt the changes, and implementing the changes necessary to make the vision a reality.

Within a strong focus on the important long-term factors, many organizations waste huge amounts of resources shifting focus from one crisis to the next without ever making sustained progress. Leaders ensure the day-to-day issues don't result in a shirting of resources and attention from the organization's "critical few" priorities to the shifting priorities of the day. Without constancy of purpose the rate of improvement over the long term will be greatly diminished.

Constancy of purpose means that quality decisions are not situational. End of month quality is the same as beginning of month. It means that the long term benefit of the organization is not sacrificed to make short-term targets. It means having your eye on the competition, whether it is in your industry or coming from elsewhere, with plans to stay ahead.

Constancy of purpose doesn’t require the threat of a customer leaving to implement corrective actions based on root cause. It means that while your team may argue about how best to accomplish it, no one is confused about the commitment to deliver reliable quality. Constancy of purpose can only exist when leadership lives it, demonstrates it, and won’t accept anything else.

Constancy of purpose in deeper sense implies that the ultimate objective remains in Focus at all the times. You rightly said that it is not infected by day 2 day reactions.

Infact Deming later readdressed his emphasis from erstwhile 'Product Quality' duly transformed to later 'Process approach' to an itegrated "Product + Process" approach, and the change was rather an auto-adjustment to the mandate of constancy of purpose.

For the academic process, which is today influenced by NCLB, the constancy of purpose precludes that the system design elements of class room process should be so well directed that Tomorrows' world aligns with what Deming or any Quality enthusiast would have wished!

Constancy of purpose needs vision-right but prior tot hat one need to go a well planned PDCA cycle. That drill will give you confidence and commitment. Good blog.

“Constancy of purpose” is persistent whatever you have innovated .Many districts try to
follow this strategy and spend prosperous life because they have strongly implemented
on it. Basically it is difficult to follow because some time circumstances change
the idea or criteria .After all to get the best result, I strictly follow it from the initial
Level ( daily routine ). It brings positive effecting my work . Therefore I can say secret of success is the “constancy of purpose”.

I believe you have captured the essence of why it is difficult to have "constancy of purpose" in an organization- you said "circumstances change".

If organizations can embrace a culture for change and be willing to continuously renew its comitment to the changes in environment, the organization is more likely to succeed. I liken this to Jim Collin's "Good to Great" in his reference to the Hedgehog concept; find what you do best and do it (and maybe... quit doing the things you aren't that good at or arent' passionate about). I believe that's the meaning of constancy of purpose.

I think Constancy of Purpose means to improve quality to become competitive in the market or wherever you stand.In schools the management must arrange physical activities for students like by give them a game period & please don't think it is useless & in place of it there would be their science period & time will save.Similarly teacher must answer the questions that are asking by the student if teacher will not reply just because of his irritation,student will get wrong impact & he will frustrat.My view about Constancy of Purpose is focus on long trem benifits & in this way we will be motivate towards the long time paybacks.

we have to implement Constancy of purpose in every field of life because it gives long term benefit which is good from every aspect. it means that if Constancy of purpose exist then each & every member of an organization can easily understand it & follow it without any confussion.
In school we can apply this by providing good environment for students like mutual understanding between students & teachers.

Constancy of purpose is a key to success. if an organisation tries to make a long term analysis by assessing the the correct changes to be made in their firm in order to acheive customer's trust, they can easily accomplish their goals and high reputation.
In a student's life I think he should plan what he is going to do in his next ten years and about his studies and about his job and what extra skills he should have to get a good job.

I believe it goes deeper than simply having a mutual understanding. Constancy of purpose will result in a recreation of the classroom system and a renewal of comittment to shared purpose.

It is unwise to give little or no thought to the problems of tomorrow. Showing a big profit today doesn't mean a whole lot. What if the company gets out of the business tomorrow???

I believe that the company will be in business for a long time if its managment is proactive. Constancy of purpose requires managment be wise enough to think over long term purposes and plan strategies to achieve those.

People will take time to believe that management is really serious, and the enthusiasm and interest of employees will only come if management really is serious.

there can be no two opinion in having constancy of purpose for organizations or even for that matter students. but i would also like to say that constancy of purpose require intense research and longsightedness as world is changing with the great speed with that requirements for future are changing drastically too because if you have future requirements in mind then you will be able to plan for long term to meet the challenges of tomorrow. but constancy of purpose dosen't mean to get rigid, you should be able to change given your plans have failed to meet the requirements of ever changing world.

The point which you have raised "constancy of purpose" (contineous improvement may need a proper attention by any organization ignoring such important aspect and shifting towards is an unprofessional approach.

Since the world is changing,so organizations are required to produce quality product s consistently for which the organizations should have goals clearly defined and should have strategies to tackle those at par with them. However, I personally feel that Organizations should divide their long terms goals into many short term goals in order to achiev long terms goals more efficiently.

I would appreciate any challenging thoughts in this respect.

constancy of purpose means innovate , spend resources for long term planning vs. quick profits, no decisions about innovation will be made without a plan about cost, method of production, employees and their skills, marketing, methods of service and customer satisfaction.

Constancy is uniquely formed the STYLE & CULTURE of the district & the organization.
Constancy make impossible to possible.
Constancy in the behaviour also remove all hardels to achieve any goal slowly but surely.

I agree that it is good practice to break large goals into smaller, more manageable short-term goals. This allows steady progress and opportunities to celebrate success regularly.

I would caution ONLY having short-term goals, however. This could lead to incremental progress, but loss of vision for the long-term. It is possible to be so focused on today, that we lose sight of tomorrow.

I think if you want to get success then you have to be consistent.basically, contancy of purpose is the way by which you can get remarkable results.because if you work on short term or front line problem then you can get success but not longer.although,if you solve the root cause of any problem the minor problems would solve automatically.

Continous Moving towards the target by coping up with the problems and hurdles which come in the way to the target and having right vision on the long term benefits, Constancy of process only be live when there will be strong leadership and strong sense of commitment.

i don't think so.actually these short trem goals help us to to improve the vision.for example if i want to pass the annual exam,firstly i have to pass the assesment test.if i could do so ,automatically at the end i would achieve the goal and if i could not do so,i would have a chance to do better in the future.

The organizing must be constant and purposeful in improving services and product.The organization should strive constantly to improve quality, productivity and service to improve the performance of today and tomarrow.Allocate the resources for long trem needs rather than the short trem profitability.Aims to be competitive to stay in bussiness and provide job.

constancy of purpose means consistently trying to strive for the betterment.although it is difficult but it can be possible by searching on new market , new technologies.Organization can get a long term pay back and being competitive if and only if they have strong focus on constant research and innovation.

"constancy of purpose" gives an organization a remarkable success for a long period of time.at the end it gives you the same results as what you plan at the begining.it told you to keep an eye on your competitors,what is required by the market?To innovate what new technologies and training programs are required by the people?with all these things one should have a prolong success.Ofcourse it require a good leadership in an organization.

Constancy of purpose in the district, the school and the classroom cannot be attain until they take necessary steps for managing it which could be achieved by proper guidance of leader. Usually people do not confident on their own ideas; they quickly shift towards other ideas without thinking that it would be right for them or not which often results in to failure. So, they should establish constancy of good performance according to requirement of goal. In my opinion ‘constancy of purpose’ is necessary to achieve success in every field of life.

in consistancy of purpose we need a plan that how we can improve quality of our product and service in a long period.it will be possible when we define some more steps to achieve the main target that is continual improvement of products and service because when we define the steps it becomes easier to understand that how to implement it.

"Constancy of Purpose" is to maintain a focus on your goal.It's become mandatory for any organization to get success and stay competitive.To attain success,there are two ways,the one is a shortcut and the other is a proper way.If we choose a shortcut it gives us quick but temporary success and if we choose a proper way it results in long term benefit,so the constancy of purpose is a proper way that helps the organization to earn a long term benefit.

The constancy of purpose is basically your perceptions how you look certain scenario,and therefore work hard to maintain even HARDER WORK to acquire certain goals and objectives.Because without setting certain goals and target you cannot strive for betterment.The world is getting competitive in every area now and without being cosisitent and reliable what you are doing or what you are producing you will stand nowhere.Now your clients demands maximum satisfaction at a minimum cost.In order to meet their demands companies should be consistent and competitive whatever they are producing.

Constancy of purpose lead us to continuous improvement by having long term ideas and plans rather than short term targets of shifting from one decision to another. By having weak intension and confusion we can’t get the long term benefits. In order to achieve goals we must have strong beginning with strong ideas by sharing it with seniors or colleagues and implement on to remain constant on decision till end with having strong intension.
