Why a Continuous Improvement Approach?: Shift Happens.
Often, educators applying quality principles are asked, "why a continuous improvement approach?" The answer: today's students will need a different set of skills to compete in tomorrow's world. The process and tools embedded in continuous quality improvement allow students to learn skills that will prepare them for the ever-changing world. Embracing change and managing paradigm shifts may be the most critical skills in tomorrow's employees. As educators, are we meeting this need?
A brilliant video clip (modified by Dr. Scott McLeod) illustrates this concept powerfully. I believe the facts below (referenced in the video) will capture your attention as they did mine:
China will soon become the number one English-speaking country in the world.
The 25% of the population in China with the highest IQ’s …is greater than the total population of North America. In India, it’s the top 28%. Translation for teachers: they have more honors kids than we have kids.
There are over 2.7 billion searches performed on Google each month.
The amount of new technical information is doubling every 2 years. For students starting a four-year technical or college degree, this means that…half of what they learn in their first year of study will be outdated by their third year of study. It is predicted to double every 72 hours by 2010.
Predictions are that by 2013 a supercomputer will be built that exceeds the computation capability of the human brain.
The original video clip was created by Karl Fisch who remixed content from David Warlick, Thomas Friedman, Ian Jukes, Ray Kurzweil and others, added some music, and came up with the presentation. Kudos to Karl for pleading the case for a focus on 21st century skills!
Shift Happens! In today's educational system, are we aware of the changes in the world around us? Are we adjusting our systems to meet the needs of today's learners? Are we visionary and forward thinking? Are we really preparing students to be "world-class"?

Amazing! Great video. The one that really got to me is that Nintendo spends more money (double) on research than the US Government on education innovation.
A paradigm shift is needed in DC.
This weekend I am giving a presentation on the "Introduction to Continuous Improvement" at the California League of Middle Schools conference in San Diego. I hope to excite and inspire and hopefully not leave too many in the swamp!
Thanks again for the inspiration.

Hi Scott,
I agree with your comment about the needed paradigm shift in Washington, D.C.
On one hand, our government asks us to prepare students for the competitive future, yet enforces an accountability system that measures the skills of the old paradigm.
What I believe is needed is a focus and assessment that measures the 21st century skills; presenting, creative problem solving, processing data and information and working in teams.
How about if we measure those skills in America? As always, thanks for sharing your comments.

This is amazing. we must not forget with what speed change is taking place and what speed we are changing. If that does not coincide after sometime there will be a much larger gap. People in developing countries specifically have to be more vigilant. Thanks for such blogs,.

The video has surprised me greatly and after knowing some incredible findings, I get the feeling as if I'm living back in 20th century :O
The change, no doubt, is intangible for today's student; particularly for the students coming from third world countries (I belong to one of such countries.) But that is not an excuse, I know... We have to keep up with the pace of continuous improvement anyway.

Hello SIR,
The fact and figures you have shown in the video is amazing. Certainly this would happen and this would be due to competition developed all round the world. If you talk about China and India you must consider the population they possesses. It has been said that human have only used 10% of his brian and this percentage is increase able.
Thank you

The facts and figure in the video are just mind-blowing and for that matter quite astonishing but for students it also is quite challenging that they should get acquainted with future developments to get competitive. The governments of developing countries must focus on bringing revolutionary changes into their education system to keep up with the pace with such astounding developments. It may also be noted that these developments must not done over the massacre of human values as it is always likely.

The facts and figure in video clip are quite incredible. It is the need of hour for us to move along with the globel village. If we couldn`t do this,we will not only remain behind but stand nowhere. So the goverment and student should take positive step to overcome these challenges.

The realities have shown in the video is not only amazing plus shocking too.The fact that really capture to me is "China will soon become the number one English-speaking country in the world."Actually we do not know what kind of rapid changes happen in the world. So the government should take action because if they wait for the moment, when everything ,absolutely everything is ready,so we shall never begin.I know prediction is difficult, especially about the future but i strongly believe that in future our country will become the number one English speaking country in the world.INSHALLAH
Thanks for such brilliant video clip. TAKECARE

Thanks for your comments all!
It appears that I "struck a nerve" with the video clip. It was intended to bring about a reaction.
We are using this video with our staff to show them how our current design and delivery from the past, will not be effective for the future.
Keep the comments coming!

The facts are stunning .The world is changing so rapidly that is beyond our imagination. If we don’t make ourselves compatible with the changes we cant compete with the global challenges. So we strived hard to cope with the growing technology. Thanks for your inspiration.

hello:
its amazing that china will soon become number one english speaking country & in 2013 a supercomputer will be built that exceeds the computation capability of the human brain.
In my opinion to move with this rapidly changing world & to stay competative in global market we have to be well aware of the rapidly changes that are occuring around us.

There is a famouse saying which goes like this:
In God we trust, others come with data
Numbers have their own significance. They speak much better and louder than anything else.
I'm sure your degree of certainity and hope will drastically change once you get the data of number of english speaking people in your country. Hopes made on the basis of available staistics makes sense but only hoping and guessing, wihtout having to know the facts, doesn't earn you anything. :P

I just viewed the video at the ASQ Eastern Iowa Spring Conference today. As a member of the business community, we need to support this program and the fundamental shift in thinking and planning for our children. It's difficult to see college graduates walk into the work place and not have the fundamental skills of problem solving and information processing. Local companies and business leaders (as well as the rank and file employees) need to take active responsibility in sharing the knowledge and teaching the skills we use everyday to help our children become world-class citizens.

Brian,
Thanks for your support of quality in education. Schools need the support of the business community and can learn much about quality through their example.
How did you like the conference today?

Jay,
The conference was very good and presented some new ideas that I could incorporate into my workplace. The C.R. District presentation was my favorite. While witnessing the numbers and facts, I was troubled about my home state's current condition. However I believe that U.S. students still have the spirit to be independent thinkers and to be innovative in developing new concepts. I look forward to contributing to the effort and please let me know how I can share the business perspective with your district and teachers.

This is an incredible blog informing about what is happening around the globe. This blog illustrated the actual difference between an underdeveloped nation and a developed one.We should seriously think about the matter, and should adopt the Continuous Improvement Approch,in order to remain competitive in each and every field of life.Continuous Improvement Approach should be adopted by the educational institutions,so that the students are wellinformed and accept the rapid changes occuring around the global village.

Curious but you should all ask yourselves what would you do in 2049 when we live in an Orwellian world with a supercomputer? Use the technology like you use your computers today, or live in paranoia from the too many Sci-fi movies you watch and maybe perhaps try to stop or change something?

A good way to get more on Maths and Science would be through self assessment tests available online. I could notice a good improvement in my son's performance in Mathematics that’s when I subscribed to 24x7Guru.com, a leading online self assessment provider.
